‘Devil You Know’ is IRJA’s second single up to date. With this song, the duo underlines their ability to smoothly merge acoustic elements such as piano and traditional percussion with synthesizers and electronic drums. The capability to create such a hybrid instrumental reminds of bands like TORA and Klangstof. They remain an honest and fragile touch while testing boundaries. Furthermore, the piano-heavy piece with its brave vocal effects hints at similarities to Låpsley’s song ‘Falling Short’.
The Swiss musicians give insight into an intimate conversation, between a couple reflecting on their harmful past. IRJA asks the question if you really want to be alone or if you go for the devil you know - a toxic relationship. Even though the predominantly melancholic soundscapes, there is a glimpse of hope, which the instrumentation carries beautifully in the bridge and the outro of the song. Eventually, no answer has been given, just a spark of brightness.
